Ardkeen Quality Food Store

All the best places to eat, shop and stay in Ireland. A local guide to local places.

How does the Jephson family’s Ardkeen Quality Food Store survive and thrive in such a dog-eat-dog world of food retailing?
Simple: Ardkeen is a virtuous enterprise. It’s modus operandi is the creation of a virtuous circle: look after your suppliers, and look after your customers, and both parties will do their best for you. Suppliers will do their best work and make the best foods, and customers will return, happy to discover these wonderful foods, and happy shop at your store. Oh, and you will also have contented staff. Brilliant staff, actually.
If that makes Ardkeen sound like the Scandinavian Model of Supermarkets, then so be it. That’s exactly what it is: enlightened, dynamic, fair, unpretentious, and fun to be with, fun to hang out with. The store on the Dunmore Road is actually a little bit of Copenhagen or Stockholm, filled with great food, and smart people, filled with people enjoyong themselves.
But there is an even deeper element to this virtue, which is all about local economics. One Saturday morning we spent a decent amount of time and money buying delicious things in Ardkeen. Looking at our receipt later, we realised that virtually all of the money was spent on produce from the counties of Waterford and Cork.
Not only had we had a wonderful experience – the staff here are the best – but we had also shopped in a way that solved the very issues that bedevil the global industrial food complex.
Shopping in Ardkeen had made us virtuous. Shop local, eat local, spend local
That’s the thing about virtue: it’s contagious. And so is shopping at Ardkeen.
