Owners Ronan and Jenny Sweeney, and chef Danny Millar, operate three of the iconic food destinations in County Down – The Parson’s Nose in Hillsborough; The Poacher’s Pocket in Lisbane; and Balloo House in Killinchy. The star of the trio, however, remains Mr Millar’s cooking at weekends in the upstairs dining room in Balloo, when one of the great chefs shows just what he can do with the best produce of the region: Lough Neagh eel with pork belly and black pudding croquette; Kilmore pigeon with sweet and sour cherries; Ballyhornan smoked salmon with hot smoked salmon mayonnaise; Peter Hannon’s cured beef cheek with baked potato mash; Finnebrogue venison rump with shin and kidney pie. Wonderful wines, and witty service, match the stellar quality of Mr Millar’s food, and Balloo House is always a treat.
