Cafe Rua

All the best places to eat, shop and stay in Ireland. A local guide to local places.

Café Rua is the original McMahon stronghold, opened originally by mum Ann McMahon, now run by daughter Colleen McMahon whilst Aran McMahon conquers the West on Spencer Street in the brilliant Rua. If we haven’t said it before, then what you need to know about Café Rua is that it is the friendliest place in the West. And we don’t mean that the staff are friendly – they are, of course – we mean that it’s a place where the other customers are incredibly friendly. Why so? Because this is one busy place, so sharing tables is essential, and when you share a table with someone and you are both having scrummy food, then how could you not get around to asking about their health, and their dog, and have they seen Pixar’s UP and which is their fave Pixar anyhow? So, salmon and potato cakes with Stephen Gould’s leaves for me, and roast loin of pork with champ and red cabbage for my new best friend, and what did you say your name was?
