Market Lane

All the best places to eat, shop and stay in Ireland. A local guide to local places.

With ten years of solid service to the citizens of Cork, Market Lane continues to forge ahead, in its inimitable and unpredictable ways. Most restaurants would celebrate 10 years in business by blowing their own trumpets, but Market Lane is celebrating by looking for other trumpets to blow: specifically, by creating a €3,000 scholarship for a culinary arts student to continue further studies within the Department of Tourism & Hospitality at Cork Institute of Technology.

This oblique way of working has always been Market Lane’s style: they do this quietly, calmly, methodically. The cooking is measured, and just-what-I-felt-like tasty: Glenbeigh mussels with coconut and chili cream; arancini of smoked Toonsbridge scamorza with spiced beetroot; smoked haddock with crispy hen’s egg; Crowe’s bacon collar with braised hispi cabbage; marmalade bread and butter pudding. Lovely stuff, served by a delightful team, and don’t miss the house beers.
